National Centre for Atmospheric Science (NCAS) Decarbonisation Strategy

The National Centre for Atmospheric Science (NCAS) has just released details of the first quantification of their carbon footprint. NCAS is a world leading research centre, funded by NERC, that provides the UK with state-of-the-art services for observing and modelling air pollution, climate change and hazardous weather. 3ADAPT have been working in partnership with NCAS since June 2022 to develop a carbon baseline, set targets to reduce their emissions and develop a range of decarbonisation pathways. With over 200 staff embedded at 12 universities and running specialised facilities including a research aircraft, atmospheric observatories and a wind tunnel, the process has required a bespoke approach to capture the unique operations of the organisation.

By understanding our own impact on the environment and acting upon it, we will ensure our research and innovation plays a responsible role in addressing environmental issues such as climate change, hazardous weather and air pollution.
— Sophie Clay, Environmental Sustainability Manager, NCAS

The baseline assessment brought together data and knowledge from across NCAS to quantify Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions, and enabled the identification of data gaps and methods for improving data collection in future iterations of the work. Having identified an appropriate target for reaching Net Zero carbon emissions, 3ADAPT are now collaborating with various teams across NCAS to identify and model potential decarbonisation pathways. These incorporate mitigation opportunities within the organisation alongside external influences and possible carbon removal strategies.
