Natural Environment Research Council (NERC)

The Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) is the UK's largest funder of independent environmental science, training and innovation, delivered through universities and research centres.

“3ADAPT have worked with us over several years to understand our environmental impact and the actions we can take to minimise harm. They take a collaborative approach to sustainability, working with rather than for clients.”

— C Snelling, NERC Sustainability Lead

3ADAPT have worked with NERC on various activities to help ‘embed sustainability in everything they do’ and develop a ‘Responsibility Framework’ to underpin their operations and research investments. This has included engaging with the NERC senior leadership and extensive data analysis to set science-based targets in order to collaboratively plot their reduction strategies on this decarbonisation trajectory.

Our work with NERC has involved working across numerous sites and Research Centres including British Geological Survey (BGS), British Antarctic Survey (BAS) as well as central operations at head office.

3ADAPT have also supported NERC to undertake their first Strategic Climate Change Adaptation (CCA) Plan. This engaged representatives from across the organisation to identify risks and opportunity areas and brought together leaders from key departments to develop actionable initiatives through a series of workshops.

We have also supported training across the organisation on a range of sustainability topics including, how to action and embed the UN Sustainable Development Goals and Climate Change Adaptation measures.

Recently we have supported NERC to develop an internal engagement and communication plan.

Our work has included considering, NERC’s work in the context of the UKRI Environmental Sustainability Strategy and UKRI targets including the commitment to Net Zero by 2040.
